School begins at 9:30 am for children. Teachers and staff arrive by 9:15 am to ensure the environment is prepared and ready for the children. Children are encouraged to leave their foot-ware neatly in the racks provided for the same and enter the premises politely greeting the staff.
The Child’s day in school consists of several phases :
Circle Time - The day typically begins with circle time, where teachers and children sit in a circle, on mats. Sitting in a circle ensures individual eye contact. The circle time begins with prayer comprising of short shlokas and small bhajans or songs. This is followed by theme based rhymes, discussions, games and stories . A monthly theme is chosen and rhymes, games, stories are presented to the kids based on the theme during the month. The circle time extends for 45 min.
Individual Work Time - Children pick their working mats and move to their designated work area. The work area has an open-floor plan. The materials are arranged in shelves neatly towards the walls. Children pick the materials of their choice and sit on their mats and work. On completion of work, they replace the materials in the appropriate shelves and proceed to pick the next material of their choice. Teachers monitor children and impart instructions individually based on the materials chosen by the child. The individual work time is for 1 to 1.5hrs, based on age group.
Meal time – A 30 min meal break follows the Individual work time.
Collaborative Work Time – Children work in small groups of 2-3, designated by the teacher and are engaged in group presentations, demonstrations, activities, writing, reading and educational games. Art, craft, dress-ups, role play, scientific experiments, gardening, nature walk, games to enhance motor skills and balance are among the activities done during the collaborative work time. This period of work is for 1 to 1.5 hours, as befits the age group.
Outdoor Play – The day typically ends with 20-30 min of outdoor play.
